after the small little accidental break.
(this was written on sunday night, just before i realized i'd somehow gone over my bandwith for january. who knew? so i upgraded my package (still inexpensive w/ yrhost) and voila. it appears that i am back.)
it's funny, isn't it, how life gets in the way of the best made plans? here i am, weeks later and i've only completed the first of the opal banister socks.
i got tired, i got sick, blah blah blah. mostly? i'm not sure i LOVE this pattern. now that the first of the socks is complete- i'm going to stick with them. i cast on for sock two and started the initial ribbing, but then i put it down. i'm tired, my wrist is sore (remember the tendonitis? apparently the number one enemy of my tendonitis is the 10key pad), and i'm not in a race! i want to finish soon- finish the second quicker than the first. i'm expected the yarn i ordered for my sockapalooza socks to arrive this week. i splurged last weekend and ordered three pair worth of sock yarn (including that fabulous regia jubilee yarn in the india colourway. i can't wait to wear those socks!), two for me and one for sockapalooza. i also ordered two new sets of pony pearl dpns to replace the ones eaten by kitten.
(back to today) my mum informs me that a package of sock yarn and needles was delivered to her house in yesterdays mail. the original plan was to go over for supper and pick up the package tonight, but. best laid plans, right? my grandfather (the one we put in the nursing home in december) fell out of bed and broke one if not both of his hips. so plans are shifting around. i took my grandma to see him in hospital last night and my dad is flying in today to be around for the surgery and stuff. i doubt my grandpa will ever walk again, his walking was iffy at best to begin with. this is stressful and worrysome and though it's nice to be able to see my dad, i wish the reasons were better. so no yummy supper at mom's tonight. i'll likely be hanging out at hillcrest hospital and won't that just be a blast?
i'm at work now and updating on the sly, so i better get back to it. i'll post more from home when i get the chance. xo.

the weekends are too short.
for the holidays, the aforementioned megs gave me a beautiful skein of opal handpainted sock yarn. it's superwash, colour number 17. we balled it up right away (meg acted as the swift (with adam pinch hitting) and myself serving as the ball winder. i held the yarn for a week or so before i decided to knit the 'retro rib' socks from the winter ik. and then? lost my magazine (found it later at mom's house). so in my desperate need to start my socks immediately, i chose the 'fluted banister' sock pattern from the six sox along project, which i sjoined and then abandoned after my cat ate almost all my dpns and i was broke etc etc.
i have to say, i'm quite fond of this sock, so far. it's very grown up and the actual pattern adds more interest than your standard run of the mill stockinette sock. i am actually following the pattern, knitting from the top down. i did my very first 'eye of partridge' heel flap, which i LOVED, and now i'm halfway through the gusset. here is a closeup of both the stitch pattern (featuring this beautiful wool) and the heel flap, which i just love:

i love this sock, and i can't wait to finish the first so i can start the second. after this, i'm knitting another BAWK hot water bottle cover for the aforementioned megs and then socks for my sockapalooza pal (sock swap organized by the lovely alison blue blog).
i spent the weekend here at my place with my steady sweetie, adam. we don't do much exciting when we hang out because time is so short. we just like to enjoy each other's company. we did go see 'the life aquatic with steve zissou', which i absolutely adored. we had supper at my mom's house last night and then went grocery shopping. today we watched 'shaun of the dead', which was a fabulous movie. very well made and very funny. i cooked us a crock pot full of chicken chili stew (a family recipe). we cuddled and at the end, i cried. i'm still kind of crying- the goodbyes get harder and harder everytime. he's somewhere on the far side of erie pa right now, and still has quite a way to drive. he should be home by, give or take 11pm. and i'll miss him til we see each other again. here is a photo of the two of us, adam's face partially obscured by my masses of hair. we're both wearing rachel knit hats.

and now, i must go finish cleaning up from the cooking, start the diswhasher, watch some more west wing, knit, and go to sleep cuddled up to my hot water bottle and dreaming of my boy. i'm such a sap, and? so not ready for the work week. see you soon. xoxo

2005. where is my flying car?

happy new year, everyone! this is my version of the beautiful and talented rachael's bawk hot water bottle cover. this will be my first finished knit of 2005, and, oddly enough, my last begun knit in 2004. i'm knitting her out of cotton ease, because really it's all i had. when i have a touch more money i'm too buy some fantastic yarn and knit one of these suckers for the lovely meg (picture in previous post). this pattern is fab. i love my hot water bottle and the cover will make it all the better- more cuddly and such. of course, today it was 60 degrees (in ohio, in january. don't get me started).
so the new year has begun amid some world tragedy. i donated all i could to the red cross, via amazon. i'm really amazed by how much they've raised in such a short time. the kindness of humanity sometimes moves me to tears. i've regained some faith in the american people, faith lost on nov 2. if you have something you can give, please do. i know this catastrophe didn't happen here at home (or wherever your home is), but it happened and it is a nightmare. so help if you can, even if you can only send warm thoughts.
i'm going to get back to the turtleneck of the hot water bottle cover. i still have 4" of 2x2 ribbing to go- it's an early bed night so i doubt i'll finish before hand. bummer. i so wanted to cuddle with the bawk tonight.
