Recently, a friend posted a photo of a hat she really liked on FB. “Who can make this hat?” She asked. She had to have it!
Another friend tagged me…so I set off to make the hat. Later it turned out that someone else made the hat for her, but I still thought I would share the pattern I had created…just in case anyone else was looking to make one of these. There seemed to be a lack of patterns for this style hat online so I figured one was needed!
There are a few patterns online now, but none of then use the simple front and back post crochet stitches to create the brim. Also, some of them are not free and you must purchase them. I created this pattern myself, but I never feel the need to charge a fee for crochet patterns. I have found so many awesome FREE patterns on the web over the years that it’s the LEAST I can do to give back a few!
For this hat, I used Lion Brand Ice Cream Crème Glacée. Color: Cookies and Cream. (I had this yarn laying around in my studio for awhile so I’m not sure if it’s still being sold. It’s a medium weight yarn a bit lighter than WW yarn, but I think you will do just as well with WW. I used a size G/6/4.25MM hook, but an H/8/5mm would work as well.
Stitches used will be: CH (chain), SC, DC, HDC, FPHDC, BPHDC, and SS (slip stitch). This pattern took about 2-3 hours to complete.

Crochet Messy Bun Hat Pattern
Row 1: Chain 32, SS to the first chain ensuring the chain is flat so that the next row won’t twist.
Row 2: Chain 1 (does not count as 1st SC), SC in the same stitch as the chain 1, SC into each of the remaining chains, SS to the Chain 1. (32 stitches)
Row 3: Chain 2, (does not count as 1st DC here or in any of the other rows)<<DC in the following pattern: 1, 1, 1, 2 in the same stitch (see photo at bottom for visual of the pattern)>>, repeat <<>> to end of row, SS to the chain 2 (40 stitches)
Row 4: Chain 2, turn
From this point on all DC will be worked into the back loop only, until Row 18. (See photo) <<DC in the following pattern: 1, 1, 1, 1, 2 in the same stitch>> repeat <<>> to the end of the row, SS to the chain 2. (48 stitches)
Row 5: Chain 2, turn.

Row 6: Chain 2, turn.
<<DC in the following pattern: 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2 in the same loop>> repeat <<>> to the end of the row, SS to the chain 2. (64 stitches)
Row 7: Chain 2, turn.
<<DC in the following pattern: 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2 in the same loop>> repeat <<>> to the end of the row, SS to the chain 2. (72 stitches)
Rows 8-17
Chain 2, turn.
1 DC into each stitch all around the row, SS to the chain 1.
Row 18: Chain 2, (Go back to working a regular stitch, instead of using the back loop only) HDC into each stitch in the row, SS to the chain 1
Row 19-22: Chain 2, 1 BPHDC, <<2 FPHDC, 2 BPHDC>> continue <<>> around the row, SS to the chain 2. (Make sure to line up your FPHDC and BPHDC with the previous row, as this is what provides the ribbed look that finishes the hat brim.) Note, I worked all of the front and back post stitches into the TOP of each stitch (see photo).
Tie off and weave in the ends.

I’m new to crocheting..what do you mean by pattern..1,1,1,1…etc
After you chain 2, you do 1 DC in the next stitch, 1 DC in the next stitch, 1 DC in the next stitch, 1 DC in the next stitch, then 2 DC in the next stitch. I’ve inserted a photo of what it would look like if that helps make it any easier. (see bottom of the pattern)
Thank you..😀😀
Isn’t the size G/6/4.25 MM too tiny to fit on an adult’s head? I’ve made other hats and have usually used a 6 MM with great success. I’m nervous to start it with a 4.25 MM so I’m going to try the 6 MM and see how that goes. I’ll let you know. Thank you soooo much for the free pattern. ❤️
Great! Let me know how it comes out!
worked all of the front and back post stitches into the TOP of each stitch (see photo). What do you mean by this?
Hi Ginny! Sorry I missed that photo! Thanks for pointing it out! I added it to the post! Hope you enjoy making the hat!
Do you have any tips on how to do this pattern for a smaller hat? Just made this one and I love it! So easy to follow the pattern. Just need a smaller size. Thank you!
Hannah, to do a smaller hat (child sized) start with a smaller chain. Try 22 instead of 32) then maybe do a few less rows….(Maybe 14 instead of 19) Let me know how it comes out!
Thank you! Working on it now. I’ll let you know
Joyful Girl, thank you so much for the pattern, but can you tell what kind and color the yarn is on the model ? thank you so much Maria
Maria, I was able to locate the yarn. It’s Lion Brand Ice Cream Crème Glacée. Color: Cookies and Cream
What brand and color is the yarn you used? I love it!
Kim I wish I could tell you, a grabbed an old unmarked yarn from my hope chest…..
Kim I just found more of this yarn in my studio. It’s Lion Brand Ice Cream Crème Glacée. Color: Cookies and Cream
Thank you for beautiful hat. I’ve had so many ask me to crochet one exactly like the picture.. I see from former comments that you don’t know what brand and color you used. I’ll try to look it up online a similar color.. great job!
Kathi, I just found another skien of this yarn. It’s Lion Brand Ice Cream Crème Glacée. Color: Cookies and Cream
Thank you so much for this pattern. I had another one that required too much yarn and I was losing more than gaining, then found his pattern ,which is better works up pretty quick, I can finish one in 2 hours . Not to mention is beautiful when finished. thank you again !
You’re welcome! And thank you for giving it a try! I’m glad you liked it! Enjoy!
Thanks for sharing! I know my daughters and granddaughter’s will love it. Can’t wait to get some made for them. 😊
Awesome! Thank you for the comment! Have fun crocheting!
I have a question: wouldn’t it be the same to alternate rows of front loop and back loop? Is it easier to turn and only do back loop?
You could certainly do that if you wish….have you done it before? I personally don’t like it and find it incredibly awkward. 🙂
I have used flo but not for a beanie! I was just curious. I’ll give it a go and see how it works 🙂
I really never saw an answer about how much yarn it takes to make one hat? Thank you.
Sorry I must have missed that question. You can make 2 hats with the skien of yarn I used, which was 394 yards /3.5 oz of lion brand acrylic yarn (lion brand ice cream) 🙂
I started to do this pattern but I am finding myself confused there were no amount of stitches at the end of the rows until I got to row 7. When I finished a row of 1,1,1,2 I would end up being off, I think but I am unable to tell due to not knowing how many stitches I should have in that row. Not sure if I am clear…lol

This was fun.,.thank you for the free pattern
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for this pattern! I love how mine turned out!!!
You are very welcome! Thank YOU for checking out the pattern!
Thanks so much for the pattern, I make touques for the guys at work, but a couple of the girls have asked for one of these, and yours seems to be the best pattern I’ve found so far
Wow! What an awesome compliment! I appreciate that! Hope your coworkers enjoy the hats!!!
I charted out the increases and was able to figure out the number of stitches – 32 for rows 1-2, 40 for row 3, 48 for row 5, 56 for row 6, 64 for for 7 and 72 for row 8. Work even on 72 stitches for the body of the hat and the “ribbing”. Hope this helps.
Karen thank you for charting the number of stitches! I added the stitch counts to the pattern above. That was super thoughtful and helpful of you.
It says on row 4 to Chain 2, turn. I’m lost on what to do. Any help would be great thank you!!
Hollie, by turning the work your BPO DC create a ribbing along the length of the hat. It’s also an option to do FPO DC instead of turning, I personally don’t like working FPO in the round because it just feels awkward to me. If you still aren’t following what I am saying give me a shout out email and I will link you to a video on how to do the turning I mentioned. 🙂
I’m so used to counting stitches. It made it easier for me. I’ve made about half a dozen of them so far. People seem to prefer softer yarn vs standard worsted weight.
I like the softer yarn as well! Glad the pattern has been helpful to you!!!
Is there an extra row? Between 17 and 18, also is it in blo or both loops?
Thanks for the pattern.
I’m not sure I understand the question. There is not an extra row.
I want to make this hat but with the ponytail holder in the circle…any idea how to implement that? Kinda new to the crochet game lol any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Laura, sure! Just start off instead of chaining 32 chains, do 32 SC around the ponytail holder. It’s simple. :). Also I have a hat pattern that uses a ponytail holder as the base if you want to try that…. https://joyfulgirl.org/2016/12/18/simple-sweet-ponytail-hat/ GOOD LUCK!
I made it in red and added a white heart. Great pattern!
How do you print these patterns out.? I can’t see where it is…thank you…Karen..
